…with Kameron Hurley
The Cartesian Theatre now welcomes guests from around the worldosphere, with an invitation to tell us all about themselves – in 25 words or less. Okay, okay, it’s not as bad as all that: they get 25 words per answer. They can wax lyrical if they want, but beware: I edit with an axe…
This week, let’s give a big hand to Kameron Hurley, award-winning writer of (add a hyphen if you want) super violent fantasy fiction and contemporary feminist genre commentary (and, yes, those are two different things).
Hi, Kameron, tell us “all” about yourself.
Kameron Hurley, Chief Instigator.
Hmm, a proud claim. What is the most inspirational thing you’ve ever read – and why?
The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, because sometimes the truth is best put simply.
What was your first published work?
God’s War, a science fiction noir novel about a woman who chops off people’s heads on a world at perpetual war.
What is the best thing you’ve never had published?
I’ve never had anything worth publishing not get published.
A really proud claim. So, what are you most proud of – in your life, not just your writing?
Having a career outside the food service industry.
And now modesty… Tell us about your latest work – novel, short story, shopping list, whatever.
Empire Ascendant, the knock-down, drag out sequel to the genocidal doppleganger epic The Mirror Empire.
Pitch us your unwritten masterpiece – you’re in the Hollywood elevator now…
What if everyone who committed or ordered acts of violence during a war was expected to take their own life when it was over?
…that’s a really good one! If only one person was to ever read your work – who would you want it to be?
I’m not much into hero worship. People who like going to wild places they’ve never been before should read my stuff, famous or not.
No-one said anything about fame, but regardless, what are your plans for the future – all of it?
Writing a lot of books. So. Many. Books. Space operas and thrillers and essays oh my.
Okay, my thanks to Kameron for, I assume, never buckling under any pressure ever! You can find out more about her at KameronHurley.com, and maybe she’ll come back again one day, more under relaxed circumstances…
